01 Place

Situated in Songkhla, a city emerging as a multicultural MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) hub for southern Thailand, Best Western Plus Patcharee Hat Yai responds to a context shaped by border trade, cultural exchange, and a growing tourism economy. Beyond its role as a destination for business and events, the hotel also caters to couples and families seeking relaxation, bringing together hospitality and leisure within a landscape inspired by the cultural and coastal character of Songkhla.

02 Making

TOPOLA Design’s landscape concept draws inspiration from Songkhla’s diverse cultural heritage and coastal environment, reinterpreting these influences to create The New Nature—a contemporary landscape where familiar elements of trees, water, shade, and tropical planting take on new forms and functions.

Along the perimeter, lush lawns and verdant gardens create a soft buffer between the hotel and its urban surroundings, gradually transitioning guests from the city into a more immersive landscape.

At the main lobby, a prominent umbrella tree forms a natural canopy, providing shade from the intense southern sun while defining the arrival experience. In the evening, pendant lights suspended beneath its canopy evoke the atmosphere of guiding lanterns. The drop-off is further embraced by a tropical garden, while an adjacent reflecting pool, lined with white stone and animated by a gentle cascade, introduces water as a calming counterpoint to the activity of arrival.

The central courtyard is conceived around a beach-inspired swimming pool—a reinterpretation of Songkhla’s coastal waters. Its curvilinear form creates a more relaxed relationship between water and landscape, incorporating shallow zones for sun lounging, sunken seating for intimate gatherings, and a swim-up bar framed by a cascading water edge. Dense tropical planting envelops the courtyard, transforming it into a lush and immersive environment at the heart of the hotel.

At the center of the courtyard, a water playscape introduces another expression of The New Nature. The Super Trees reinterpret the broad, umbrella-like canopy of the rain tree as abstract architectural structures that combine play, shade, and landscape. Water-play elements and slides animate the ground level, while elevated gardens above increase the presence of greenery and provide greater privacy for guestrooms overlooking the courtyard. Nature is no longer confined to the ground plane, but expands vertically through the architecture, creating layers of greenery experienced from multiple levels.

Through the interplay of natural references, contemporary forms, water, planting, and program, the landscape creates a new interpretation of Songkhla’s tropical character—one that is playful, immersive, and rooted in place.
