FORM FOLLOWS THE RIVER

Landscape Design for Park Kret Riverside Residences

A Strong  Sense of Place
PLACEMAKING

01 Place

Set along a riverbend of the Chao Phraya River and facing the historic island of Ko Kret, the site is uniquely positioned to capture panoramic river views, as well as both sunrise and sunset. As one of the country’s primary water traffic arteries, the river presents a distinct set of challenges: privacy, intense solar exposure, and erosion driven by constant movement.

Conceived as a final retreat from urban living, this riverfront residence is envisioned as a place of quiet permanence—the owner’s last home—where the pace of life slows and daily rituals reconnect with nature, accommodating both the immediate family and extended generations.

02 Making

The design draws from the river’s continuous flow, shaping spatial sequences and landscape rooms in response to its presence, a “form follows river” principle.

Parallel layers of low walls, planting masses, water elements, terraces, and open lawns unfold gradually toward the river’s edge, softening boundaries and creating a layered transition from residence to riverfront. The river is not treated as a backdrop, but as an active generator of form, experience, and atmosphere, guiding movement, framing views, and grounding the landscape in its context.

TOPOLA Design reinterprets the garden character for Pakkret Residence as a fusion of บ้านสวน (rural garden house) and เรือนคหบดี (traditional nobleman’s residence), blending formal grandeur with a more relaxed, whimsical landscape expression. The planting palette is composed of ornamental trees that define space and structure key views, complemented by softer, more dynamic species such as willows and ornamental grasses that move gently with the breeze, bringing a sense of lightness and seasonality to the garden.

The planting palette includes ornamental trees selected not only for aesthetic and ecological value but also for their symbolic associations in local belief systems—promoting health, safety, and prosperity for the residents.

The Riverside Pavilion

The pavilion adopts a traditional gabled roof form, appearing to float lightly on stilts above the riverbank. Its delicately articulated wooden structure references Lanna temple carpentry, balancing structural expression and spatial lightness.

The Riverside Reflecting Pool

A reflecting pool filled with native bua sai (lotus) serves as a transitional element, metaphorically extending the river into the main house. The central swimming pool, positioned between the Main House and the Clubhouse, anchors the heart of the compound. While simple in its rectangular outline, the pool integrates a complex underwater topography inspired by the natural contours of riparian landscapes. It includes a shallow lounging zone for children and families, as well as a river-facing lap pool and jacuzzi area that enjoys the site’s serene views.

The Main Swimming Pool

Framing the long axis of the grand pool towards the river visually merges water and sky, reinforcing the sense of infinite horizon and bringing the river closer to the Clubhouse. A mature mango tree is preserved at the poolside as a living heritage and focal point, celebrating the memory of the site.

The Pool Pavilion

While the riverside pavilion adopts a traditional gabled roof form, appearing to float lightly on stilts above the riverbank. Its delicately articulated wooden structure references Lanna temple carpentry, balancing structural expression and spatial lightness. In contrast, the poolside pavilion embraces a more contemporary silhouette. Screened with intricately patterned timber panels inspired by ฝาปะกน (traditional carved decorative panels), it offers both privacy and natural ventilation while framing selective garden views.
